Mass. imposes new limits on shelter stays [Video]

People staying in Massachusetts’ emergency shelters will face a nine-month limit, with some exceptions, under a supplemental funding bill that Gov. Maura Healey has signed into law.

A short-term funding bill the Democratic governor quietly signed into law on Tuesday also pumps hundreds of millions of dollars in taxpayer money into the system, whose costs have skyrocketed as the state deals with an influx of migrant arrivals.

“This supplemental budget dedicates resources to balance the budget and maintain critical services and programs. It also implements a length of stay policy for Emergency Assistance shelter, which is a responsible step to address our capacity and fiscal constraints as Congress has continued to fail to act on immigration reform,” Healey said in a statement.
