Cabell County Schools excess levy up for vote in May primary [Video]

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – A student in Cabell County eats breakfast and lunch for free each day, teachers are paid more, and students in sports do not have to pay to play.

Cabell County Superintendent Ryan Saxe said the funding to offer those benefits could go away if the school excess levy does not pass.

“It is going to make the school district very, very different than people are used to and expect,” Saxe said.

That is not all that can change. Saxe said the number of resource officers, nurses and counselors would decline.

“All you have to do is go look at a West Virginia county without an excess levy they are bare bones, the salaries and employees are at the state minimum. There is nothing extra,” Saxe said.

The excess levy covers more than 20% percent of the district’s funding and contributes about $30.5 million per year.
