Weather Service offers tornado safety advice for mobile home owners after West Michigan storm | State [Video]

MICHIGAN (WJRT)- According to the National Weather Service, mobile homes are one of the most dangerous places to be during a tornado.

A large majority of tornado fatalities happen in the home. And of those, just over half occur in a mobile or manufactured home.

“If things aren’t anchored down properly, it can- the wind can get under them and cause significant damage,” said meteorologist Jaclyn Anderson of the Detroit NWS branch.

 She said the mobile home’s lack of a firm foundation makes it particularly vulnerable to tornadoes.

And ABC12’s own Isaac Cleland agrees.

“Being in a mobile home during a tornado is never a safe place,” he said.

In a permanent home, the safest place to go is the basement or an interior room.

But without those options, Anderson said the best choice for mobile owners is to stay away from the property entirely.
