Wanted – Families to learn to swim together [Video]

CLEVELAND, Ohio – A novel multi-generational approach to swimming lessons is set to save lives – and create summer fun – across Greater Cleveland.

The YMCA of Greater Cleveland is inviting all generations of non-swimming families to put their toe in the water – quite literally – and learn together.

District executive director Chris Scheuer, who also rus the Hillcrest Family YMCA branch in Lyndhurst, is keen to get grandparents, children and grandchildren learning to swim together as part of May’s Water Safety Month.

He said: “Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death for children ages one-to-four, and the second leading cause for ages five-to-14, and what is really interesting is this epidemic disproportionately impacts children of color.”

He said 64 percent of Black children and 45 percent of Latino children cannot swim, compared to just 40 percent of White children.
