Beacon of Hope ABA preparing students with autism for the school year [Video]

ANDALUSIA, Ala. (WTVY) – Classrooms are opening back up in the Wiregrass and empty desks are being filled with students.

But for some kids, these bustling environments can be overstimulating for those with autism.

Beacon of Hope ABA provides behavioral therapy and works to build life skills for those in need. This summer, they’ve exposed kids with autism to coping mechanisms, unfamiliar environments, and strategies to help make that transition to school a little easier.

Schools can be overwhelming with loud noises, chatter, bells and activities going on in every corner. This can cause what is referred to as “sensory overload,” which triggers a sensory sensitivity and can hinder behavior and academic focus.

”Something that we work on in ABA therapy, for example, is when a child finds those noisy environments like a lunchroom really aversive, we work on wearing headphones and things like that,” said Beacon of Hope’s owner, …
