SPANISH police have seized a live grenade from a major port in southern Spain.

The bizarre discovery was made by the Guardia Civil on August 6, but was only reported to the public today.

The handheld explosive device is of British origin and dates back to World War II.

It was found in the Puerto de Sevilla (Port of Sevilla) and forced an armed response from the Tedax bomb squad.

The rusty device was an MILSS grenade that still had its fuse, lever and safety ring attached, meaning it was still live and could have potentially exploded.

The bomb disposal experts moved the grenade to a safe area before carrying out a controlled explosion.

In a press release, the Guardia Civil warned the public that such devices are not collectible and that both their trade and possession is illegal.
