Vineyard Wind announces plan to remove damaged wind turbine blade, resume installations [Video]

Vineyard Wind released a plan Tuesday to remove the remainder of a damaged wind turbine blade that broke off Nantucket one month ago and scattered debris that later washed up on several Massachusetts beaches, as the company is given the green light to resume some operations. Large and small fiberglass and foam washed ashore on the island’s south-facing beaches and some Cape Cod beaches after a section of a blade on a turbine undergoing testing broke and fell into the ocean on July 13.The company said it started controlled cutting activities on turbine AW-38 on Sunday and Monday in an effort to reduce the amount of the damaged blade that presents a risk for additional debris falling.Several boats were used to secure as much debris as possible for immediate containment as land-based crews managed debris recovery.
