Safety upgrades at south Austin intersection enter new construction phase [Video]

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Safety improvements at a south Austin intersection entered a new phase of construction this month, city transportation leaders shared in an Austin Mobility newsletter Monday.

Construction began in late May to revamp the intersection of Stassney Lane and South First Street after the city’s Vision Zero program data noted the area was classified as a high-crash intersection. The new design work aims to minimize crashes while also improving mobility for pedestrians, cyclists and other transit users.

Crews relegated work to the southeast corner of the intersection in early August. Under the new phase of work, officials flagged there are temporary closures in place on the outside lanes of eastbound traffic on Stassney Lane as well as the outside lanes of northbound traffic on South First Street.
