AGAWAM, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) – A memorial ceremony was held Monday at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam despite the wet weather.

Many members of the community were in attendance including multiple veterans from different branches of the Armed Forces.

The event began with a Memorial Day address from the Lieutenant Governor, Kimberley Driscoll.

She was then followed up by Jon Santiago, the MA Secretary of the Executive Office of Veterans’ Services.

Western Mass News Spoke with Congressmen Richard Neal about the true meaning behind Memorial Day.

“Well that’s what the term memorial implies, to memorize, and America set apart from the rest of the world, in the sense that these individuals serve valiantly, with their own lives, and today we mark our gratitude to them,” Neal said.

The Armed Forces medleys were played to honor each veteran in attendance from all of the branches of service.
