After-School All-Stars in Toledo receives recognition from local leaders [Video]

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – After-School All-Stars here in Toledo received recognition from local leaders on Tuesday.

The non-profit focuses on low-income youth and this is the first year of the public safety-led mentorship program.

Toledo Firefighter, Pvt. Amanda Davis, was one of 17 mentors this year. She spent several months with eighth grader Janiyah Pierce after school hours.

“They’re kind of like nurses on the street,” said Pierce.

“Just to see her open up to me over the last couple of months, you know she’s really shy so, when she opens up and can tell me things that are personal to her and near and dear to her, I know that I’m making an impact,” said Davis.

From phone calls to events, interactions between a mentor and a mentee can take many different forms.
