Agriculture Safety Experts Weigh in on Clinton Farm Accident | News [Video]

CLINTON, N.Y. — It’s a hidden danger lurking inside manure tankers at farms, but one that took the lives of two men in Clinton on Thursday.

After two men died in a manure tanker accident, experts in farm safety spoke about the hazards.

“It’s a hydrogen sulfide poisoning. Hydrogen sulfide is a gas that is associated with manure pits. At low concentrations, it can cause eye irritations and at high concentrations, it can quickly cause loss of consciousness and death,” explained Dan Neenan, director of the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety.

The two men, 33-year-old Nathan Doody of DeRuyter and 29-year-old Tyler Memory of Tully, were likely overcome by the gas after a tool fell into the tank.

One man went after the tool and became incapacitated. Then, the second man went in to try to help him.
