ALEA warning you about boat safety this summer [Video]

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Now that it’s warming up outside, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency wants to make sure you’re safe while out on the water this summer.

The state’s Marine Patrol Division investigated one marine-related death during the Memorial Day holiday weekend which happened on Logan Martin Lake in St. Clair County. ALEA reported Delbert Shaw from Riverside fell into the water and drowned while trying to dock a boat Monday night.

ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor says these tragedies highlight the need for continued enforcement and education.

Sgt. Jeremy Burkett says if you’re new to boating, you should always take an experienced boater with you. He also said to avoid driving the vessel while it’s dark outside. Most importantly, he said you should wear a safety device just as you would while in a car.
