American Legion of Iowa Boys State accepting applications [Video]

DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) – An 84-year-old program teaches outgoing high school juniors how government works.

American Legion of Iowa Boys State is accepting applications for this summer.

It covers the election process, how to campaign, how to represent your community, understanding why you own property, why you have to pay taxes and how that money is used.

Boys State alumni include governors and astronauts, but participation has dropped by about 50 percent since the pandemic.

Organizers think losing a year of recruiters who could go back to their schools and encourage other students to sign up hurt. Boys State is also working on a new marketing plan with help from the Iowa National Guard.
