Arizona ranked 8 for trespassing casualties on railroads [Video]

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News)— The Federal Railroad Administration recently updated its preliminary statistics for trespassing casualties by state for 2023, and Arizona ranks near the top of the list.

This comes after we just saw one man killed by a train in a vehicle collision Friday night.

The state coordinator for Arizona Operation Lifesaver, Doug Farler, told me that the FRA’s preliminary statistics showed that Arizona now ranks eighth for the most pedestrian rail trespass casualties in the country.

“It’s a list we don’t want to be on,” Farler said.

Pedestrian rail trespass casualties represent any person who gets injured or killed by a train on a railroad. For 2023 alone, there were 1,409 casualties, with over 700 of those being fatalities in the country.

Arizona had 39 of those casualties, with 24 fatalities and 15 injuries.
