Austin Energy and Austin Fire Department team up for Electrical Safety & Hazards Training [Video]

Did you know both Austin Energy and Austin Fire Department are often first responders to the same emergency scenes?

Whether it’s a vehicle collision with a utility pole or a structure fire, our crews work together to help secure the area, prevent hazards and disconnect power at the location to ensure the scene is safe for those involved.

Austin Energy staff presented specially-tailored electrical safety and hazards training to members of the Austin Fire Department (AFD) Graduate Fire Academy over the course of three days at the St. Elmo Service Center and Training Yard.

AFD firefighters gained knowledge on how to locate and identify electrical equipment such as pole/pad-mounted devices, overhead and underground transformers, switches, banks and reclosers. Trainees also learned how to respond to safety incidents involving utility equipment, emergency care for electrocutions and bucket truck operations and rescues.
