Blue Valley District students kickoff back to school with safety and inclusion top of mind [Video]

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (KCTV) – It’s transition day for Blue Valley students, meaning only sixth and ninth graders returned to school. The rest of their classmates will join them on Tuesday, August 13 for the first official day of classes for the district.

A pep band welcomed freshmen for the first day at Blue Valley Northwest. Students walked through the doors with the drum line playing and teachers just past the doors.

It’s a tradition at Northwest and other high schools in the district that with the help of the marching band, teachers greet freshmen for the first day of class. Those same students will walk out waving goodbye to those same teachers on their last day as seniors.

Students aren’t the only ones with first-day jitters. Leah Vomhof is starting her first day as principal at Blue Valley Northwest.

Vomhof previously taught middle and high school students, and since 2022 served as Northwest’s assistant principal.
