Boat safety at the forefront ahead of Fourth of July celebrations [Video]

The Fourth of July is right around the corner, and celebrations will be happening across the state.For some, like Dennis Curran of Underhill, he’ll be enjoying it out on the water of Lake Champlain on his boat. “We (Burlington) have the best fireworks in the country,” Curran said.According to Burlington’s Parks, Rec, and Waterfront Deputy Harbormaster Rob Peterson, Curran is one of the lucky ones.“Historically, it’s been a very competitive process to actually get in,” Curran said.Peterson said it’s become so competitive that they’ve needed to create a lottery system to decide who gets to dock their boat in one of Burlington’s two public marinas for July 3 and 4.Over the course of the spring, 160 applications were submitted for roughly 80 spots. The application deadline was May 30.Curran made the cut and wants to make the most of the experience.However, he also wants to play it safe. “You got …
