Boating safety reminders ahead of Memorial Day weekend [Video]

KENNEBUNK, Maine — As the weather warms up and we head into a holiday weekend, many are preparing to take their boats out on Maine’s waters. 

With National Safe Boating Week underway, officials are issuing important reminders to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience on the water. 

Each year, boating accidents result in the deaths of 5-10 people in Maine, with 70 percent of these victims not wearing life vests.

As the boating season kicks off, boaters should be aware of new laws. 

“As of this year, people 25 and younger are required to take a boating safety course,” local boat owner Keith Hafer explained.

This regulation aligns Maine with over 40 other states that have similar laws aimed at preventing accidents on the water.
