Charleston mayor reminds residents of flooding safety ahead of expected rainfall [Video]

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – City of Charleston officials are reminding residents of the best practices to be safe when or if flooding should happen.

The National Weather Service issued a Flood Watch for much of the Lowcountry on Monday, and localized flooding will be likely in poor drainage and urban areas.

Charleston Mayor William Cogswell shared flooding safety tips in a post on social media on Sunday.

  • According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, half of all flooding-related drownings involve a vehicle being driven into dangerous floodwaters.
  • It takes as little as six inches of moving water to knock over an adult. A foot of running water is enough to carry away most vehicles.
  • Do not walk or drive through floodwaters. If you encounter floodwaters, turn around and find a safe route.
