Clinton County family pushing for change in hit-and-run laws [Video]

WILMINGTON, Ohio (WXIX) – A Wilmington family is asking for the community’s help to change hit-and-run laws in Ohio after their son was hit and killed walking near his home.

Daniel Smith’s family explained why they are advocating for harsher penalties in Ohio hit-and-run cases.

Daniel’s mother Cheri Smith is working to collect enough signatures to bring her ideas on harsher hit-and-run penalties to lawmakers.

Daniel’s family is in the early stages of this process. but she hopes the community will sign the petition, and Daniel’s law will one day keep any families from experiencing the loss they are dealing with.

“We are just trying to make the laws that it brings awareness that this is not okay,” Cheri said. “You can not just hit and kill someone and run and get a slap on the wrist. It’s way too lenient.”
