A construction worker died Monday morning after being trapped in a large hole in Union County, the Kenilworth Police Department said on Facebook.

The worker was attempting to install a storm drain in the rear of the business at 351 Monroe Ave. in Kenilworth while using an excavator, police said.

“First responders attempted life saving measures but unfortunately the accident resulted in the worker being pronounced dead at the scene,” authorities said in the post.

The worker was a 29-year-old male, said Kenilworth Police Department Det. Sgt. Brian Pickton.

Joanna Hawkins, a spokeswoman for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, confirmed the agency is investigating the incident.

No other information, including the worker’s identity or their employer, was released.

Kenilworth Police Department Chief Frederick Soos Jr. did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
