Coroner IDs N. Charleston employee fatally shot while driving sanitation truck [Video]

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – The Charleston County Coroner’s Office has identified the North Charleston Public Works employee who died Thursday after being shot while on the job.

Da’twan Gatling, 26, died from a gunshot wound at approximately 2:18 p.m. at Trident Medical Center, Coroner Bobbi Jo O’Neal said. O’Neal said Gatling was shot at approximately 10:46 a.m. in the area of Bayfield Drive.

Police said the shooting led to a crash of the sanitation truck Gatling was driving into a tree along Dorchester Road near Michaux Parkway.

Witnesses told police they believed the shooting occurred in the neighborhood just west of the location of the crash. Police searched that area and recovered spent shell casings and broken glass believed to be from the windows of the sanitation truck the victim was …
