RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – Summer is a good time to experience the views of the Black Hills, with many peaks to climb and trails to hike. But with hiking and climbing, accidents can happen.
The Custer County Search and Rescue team is there for when those accidents do come up.
This year’s numbers are down compared to last year’s abnormally high season, but the search and rescue team still sees busy days.
Typical calls for the rescue team include a hiker who may have fallen and injured themselves, or is experiencing some type of medical emergency.
Director of Custer County Search and Rescue Sam Smolnisky said that while the trails in the Black Hills are beautiful, they can also be really rocky and some people may not be used to that. So, it’s best to plan for your hike.
