WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – With real-feel temperatures soaring to 115 degrees, being outdoors in these conditions isn’t just unpleasant, it can be dangerous. Heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke, are serious concerns, especially for those who must train or work in such extreme heat.

Gary Diehm, the head athletic trainer at Midwestern State University, emphasizes the importance of acclimatization.

“In football, the moment you put on a helmet and shoulder pads, you’re increasing your body temperature by 15 to 20 degrees,” Diehm explained.

Athletes, accustomed to physical activity in extreme heat, can still be at risk. Heat cramps often start in areas like the calves and hamstrings, leading to profuse sweating and dehydration. If untreated, this can escalate to a heat stroke, a critical medical emergency.
