Emergency sirens restored in Chicago SW suburbs [Video]

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Several emergency sirens in the southwest suburbs are working again after they failed to go off during two tests this month.

Diana Tousignant is director of the Oak Lawn Regional Communications Center, which is also responsible for emergency sirens in Alsip, Bridgeview, Burbank, Evergreen Park, Hodgkins, Justice and Lyons.

She said technicians have figured out why the sirens didn’t go off during the usual monthly test last week, as well as a second test this week.

“It’s essentially a box that stopped working, which would prevent  the transmission to set off  a siren,” Tousignant said. “It’s not the physical sirens that are not working, they’re functioning. It’s not like every siren decided to stop working. It’s just the radio transmitter.

The sirens worked properly during a test Wednesday.

The Communications Center is still looking at a new system that would improve the operation and testing of its emergency sirens.
