Monday (May 13)’s Emmerdale opened with Nicky Milligan (Lewis Cope) still fighting for his life in hospital as his sleep-deprived and distraught parents Ruby (Beth Cordingly) and Caleb (William Ash) kept vigil by his bed.

Nicky suffered head injuries following a car accident and was left with swelling on his brain. The police told Ruby and Caleb that Nicky wasn’t the one driving when the accident happened.

Back in the village, the driver of the vehicle, Ethan Anderson (Emile John), was preparing to start his new job as a hot-shot human rights lawyer. His family were proud – but Ethan’s mind was elsewhere. When he saw Ruby collapsing in tears in Moira Dingle (Natalie J. Robb)’s arms, his guilt became too much to bear.

Seeing how upset his son was, Charles (Kevin Mathurin) steered him to the church, where he urged Ethan to tell him what was bothering him.
