‘Extraordinary’ Atlantic hurricane season ahead, NOAA warns [Video]

Massachusetts and other coastal regions along the Atlantic Ocean are being warned to expect one of the busiest hurricane seasons on record, thanks to unprecedented ocean heat and a brewing La Nina.There’s an 85% chance that the Atlantic hurricane season that starts in June will be above average in storm activity, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced Thursday in its annual outlook. “Everybody from the Caribbean all the way up to Nova Scotia should be on high alert throughout this hurricane season,” Dr. Jennifer Francis of Wood’s Hole-based Woodwell Climate Research Center said during an interview with WCVB for this year’s summer weather outlook. “Just the fact that there are more (hurricanes forecasted this season) gives us better chances of having one come ashore somewhere.”“This season is looking to be an extraordinary one in a number of ways,” NOAA Administrator Rick Spinrad said.The forecast calls for 17-25 named storms …
