NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – New Orleans is home to the most advanced burn center in the Gulf South, cutting recovery times in half and saving more lives than ever before.

One successful patient is Dale Lambert, a pilot who was in desperate need of life-saving care about 18 months ago, after his plane went down in a fiery Slidell crash.

Lambert mostly flew charter missions for the Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency. But on Nov. 6, 2022, he flew with a U.S. veteran.

“It was a heart transplant patient who got a call. We shortly got a call afterward,” Lambert said. “Flew them from Atlanta to Nashville and dropped them off there.”

After finishing his work, he set his instruments to the airport in Slidell.

“I had an uneventful flight home,” Lambert said. “It was a really pretty night, actually.”

But as he approached the landing, Lambert says he had seconds to react to thick fog covering the runway.
