Flames engulf Quartz Lake public use cabin [Video]

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) – A public use cabin abutting Quartz Lake near Delta Junction caught fire Monday afternoon, but the blaze has since been quashed.

“It was mayhem at the campground. There weren’t very many people there, but everybody who was there just started running over,” said Randi Montgomery, the owner of Quartz Lake Boat Rentals.

She said she saw the fire around 3 p.m.

“I was dealing with some people who wanted to buy merchandise, and we looked over at the log cabin, and it was obviously on fire,” she said.

Another witness called 911, and the Fairbanks Emergency Communications Center then alerted local authorities. The Alaska Division of Forestry and Fire Protection (DOF), Delta Junction Fire Department and Fort Greely Fire Division responded.

A DOF release said the blaze spread into about a quarter acre of black spruce surrounding the cabin.

“The fire was getting bigger really fast,” Montgomery said.
