TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Thursday was the official start of summer, a time when crime typically rises.

U.S. Representative Kathy Castor said as of April 30, there have been 320 gun-based homicides in Florida alone.

Rep. Castor calls on Congress to pass gun safety laws

Castor spoke in Tampa on Thursday, encouraging the community to take a stand against gun violence.

“It’s outrageous that in America today, one of the leading causes of death among kids is death by gun,” Castor said while standing next to members of Moms Demand Action, the Tampa Police Department, Safe & Sound Hillsborough, and others.

Castor is calling on Congress to pass commonsense gun safety laws.
