FVTC receives grant to train high school students in firefighting [Video]

GRAND CHUTE, Wis. (WBAY) – Some high school students are one step closer to a career as a firefighter.

The Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services is presenting a check of more than $15,000 to Fox Valley Technical College on Thursday to give teenagers hands-on training.

“It’s an opportunity for them to actually take a look at this as a career or a way to help out their local communities if it’s something they thought of but never had the opportunity to try out, but now they have the opportunity to try it out,” Jim Austad, one of the fire protection faculty, said.

Students interested in firefighting can come to FVTC to learn how fire spreads and how they can control the flames to protect people in an area during the Firefighting Principles course.
