Greensboro Police Department has a new unit on the road, but they’re not police officers. The Piedmont Triad’s first Civilian Traffic Investigator program is underway through the Greensboro Police Department. There are four Civilian Traffic Investigators and a fifth on the way. Their job is to respond to non-emergency traffic issues like road closures, fender benders, traffic direction, property damage-only vehicle crashes, and stranded motorists. The difference between these positions and police officers is that they won’t carry a gun, wear an officer’s uniform, or drive a police vehicle. Instead, they’ll be driving a specific traffic investigator truck that has emergency lights on the top. “When you see this vehicle out there, understand it is the same. It’s a civilian traffic investigator, they’re there to do the wreck investigations or to help restrain the motorists or anything else that they can do,” Greensboro Police Sergeant A.D.
