Ham radio operators prepare for active hurricane season [Video]

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE)—As the anticipation of an active hurricane season grows, local leaders in Jefferson Parish are emphasizing the importance of power resilience in disaster scenarios.

During a weekend event, the Jefferson Amateur Radio Club showcased its crucial role in emergency communication and the unique capabilities of ham radios.

“We don’t need a telephone, we don’t need the internet. We are using airwaves,” explained Chris Mittenberger, a club member.

This method of communication is particularly valuable when strong winds and storms knock out traditional utilities like internet and phone service.

The event, held at the Wally Pontiff Playground in Old Metairie, was part of the national Ham Radio Field Day. This annual event brings together around 40,000 amateur radio operators nationwide to simulate emergency conditions.

Participants communicate using only generators and solar power, demonstrating the resilience and reliability of ham radio systems during power outages.
