Heartland Flood: Offutt breaks ground on two replacement facilities after 2019 disaster [Video]

BELLEVUE, Neb. (WOWT) – It’s time to begin work at Offutt Air Force Base.

Crews are constructing two campuses.

The first is a $150 million Nuclear Command, Control and Communications campus.

“Very important facility—one that was destroyed during the flood several years ago,” said the Air Force Civil Engineer Center’s Natural Disaster Recovery Division Chief Col. Robert Bartlow. “So we’re very excited to get this project underway.”

Bartlow said since the 2019 event, there hasn’t been one centralized home for the crews responsible for protecting the country during a nuclear conflict.

“They’re getting the mission done,” he said. “They’ve been doing that since 2019, but doing it in a way that creates additional hardship for the individuals involved in this mission. So having a facility for them will not only make their lives easier, but make them more effective at their mission.”

It’s one they said will be better protected against future floods.
