Henderson, North Las Vegas approved as charter school authorizers [Video]

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The cities of Henderson and North Las Vegas have been approved as charter school authorizers.

That means both cities will be able to sponsor public charter schools within their city limits. The Nevada Department of Education says the cities will join the state’s public charter school authority.

Gov. Joe Lombardo said the goal is to increase school choice for students across the valley. FOX5 spoke with the leaders and officials in both cities. They said one benefit is that the cities will be able to connect charter schools with other resources to help students beyond the classroom.

“Right now, charter schools don’t partner with out before- and after-school programs with parks and recreation that offer tutoring opportunities and other things that might help students improve their education skills, and so we can put those partnerships together,” City of Henderson Mayor Michelle Romero said.
