A quarter of a million children in the USA suffer severe burns each year. Opioids and other strong pain killers are typically used to treat pain, but a risk of addiction is present with long-term use.
Dr Henry Xiang and his multidisciplinary team at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital are exploring the immersive nature of virtual reality (VR) to alleviate pain during painful medical procedures. Initial results are highly promising.
