Iowa school safety task force working against limited funding to bolster school safety [Video]

DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) – Just over 7 months after 2 people were killed in a school shooting at Perry High School, legislators, law enforcement, school officials, and more met here in Des Moines to determine the future of school safety.

It’s part of a School Safety Task Force between the Department of Public Safety, the Department of Education, Homeland Security, and Emergency Management.

Thursday’s meeting mainly went over the ins and outs of structural safety resources schools may have, such as door locks, key card scanners, fencing, and ballistic windows.

But it’s not as simple as installing these measures.

Many of the cheaper options discussed, such as plastic pieces that prevent classroom doors from being opened, violate Iowa’s fire code.

“I think that’s where we need to walk the line here, though,” said Carter Nordman, who represents Perry and other communities in the Iowa House of Representatives.
