Jacksonville State University building new storm shelter for severe weather [Video]

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. (WBRC) – JSU leaders are still rebuilding from 2018 storms, and are now making safety a priority. The school is building a new multi-use storm shelter next to Bennett Field near the Paul Carpenter Village. The shelter is Part of JSU’s ongoing campus transformation.

When completed, the 16,000 square foot facility will be equipped to provide a safe place for thousands of people on campus and the community. The multi-use design will also be used by the Marching Southerners and other approved organizations. Construction completion and opening of this new shelter is expected to in the early Summer of 2025.

Michael Barton, JSU Director of Public Safety says, “We hope it never has to be used, but unfortunately, history tells us otherwise that this community has been devastated before by tornadoes and severe weather.
