Lawmakers question Medicare leaders about billing fraud scheme [Video]

Federal leaders are now asking questions about a billing scheme that’s cost taxpayers between $2 and $3 billion.WISN 12 News first uncovered the issue, involving catheters, in February. Dozens of people called our tip line saying companies they’d never heard of billed Medicare on their behalf for catheters they never requested or received. The National Association of Accountable Care Organizations, a nonprofit group of doctors, hospitals and health care providers, says Medicare paid $2.1 billion for catheters in 2023. Their analysis of Medicare claims data that they have access to shows the amount increased from $153 million in 2021. 12 News Investigates reported on the $2B figure in February.
