Leftover soybean grain from February train derailment causing a nuisance in Salix, IA [Video]

SALIX, Iowa (KTIV) – Residents in the Northwest Iowa town of Salix living next to the train tracks on Highway 75 are noticing an unpleasant odor coming from leftover rotting soybean grain leftover from a train derailment in February 2024.

“It smells like something died across the road. I mean, it honestly does. It’s just rotten, rotten smell,” said Gene Monk, who lives near where the train derailment occurred.

On Feb. 28 Union Pacific Crews worked to clear up an overnight train derailment, while most of the wreckage was removed, some soybeans that did spill are still on the ground and causing a big stink.

A couple who live across the tracks said the smell is sometimes unbearable. They’re hoping the issue will be resolved after making a call for help.
