Long Beach aquarium releases rehabilitated pelicans [Video]

Dozens of pelicans that were stranded in May are getting a second chance by being released into the wild again.

KNX News’ Nataly Tavidian spoke with Dr. Britney Stevens, a Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific veterinarian, about the rehabilitation efforts.

“The aquarium was able to respond to a call for a mutual aid from the Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center, who is basically being inundated with lots and lots of these pelicans that were stranding,” she said.

The birds were stranded with severe malnutrition and other injuries, Stevens noted.

“So since the event has started, more than 100 pelicans have been cared for at Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center,” she said.

Some staff members do get to witness the pelicans being released.
