BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A new study puts Louisiana in first place nationwide for the highest rate of medical malpractice.
The study used National Practitioner Databank adverse action reports to show which states had the highest rates of medical malpractice.
Nationwide, there has been a total of 502,971 reports filed. The state identified as having the highest rate is Louisiana.
According to the report, there were 14,629 adverse action reports filed in the state between 2013 and 2023, equaling an average of 1,330 reports filed every year.
Data between 2022 and 2023 showed a 27% decrease in the number of reports filed. Researchers said this could mean that the number of reports filed could keep dropping by the end of 2024.
Wyoming and Colorado followed behind Louisiana for the highest rates of medical malpractice.
