Lowcountry Red Cross chapter gets ahead of hurricane season with program launch [Video]

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – The American Red Cross Lowcountry Chapter is getting disaster ready following an expert prediction of an above-normal hurricane season this year.

June 1 is the first day of hurricane season. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, there is an 85% chance of an above-average season because of near-record high ocean temperatures and less Atlantic trade winds.

In response, the Red Cross is launching a statewide program, Prepare SC. The program promotes emergency preparedness and disaster recovery for residents. The initiative accepts donations for the organization to prepare volunteers for situations such as hurricane relief, home fires and blood drives. Interested supporters can visit the program on the organization site.

The Lowcountry branch has 181 volunteers ready to assist families, military members and veterans. Red Cross officials say disasters have nearly doubled over the last decade, leaving a growing need for more trained volunteers. Officials say support …
