Lupus survivors journey guides loved ones also impacted by the disease [Video]

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – A Lupus survivor gives insight into how the people in their lives can help them cope. The autoimmune illness attacks the body’s organs and tissues, making life a struggle. Learning how to interact with and treat survivors can help those living with the painful symptoms.

“I don’t look like what I’ve been through,” said Katurah Hughes. “I don’t look like what I’m still going through.”

At age 17, an active Hughes awoke to a swollen body, pain, and blemishes on her face. She was diagnosed with Lupus and only then learned her mother had it.

“There is a lot of sensitivity from being out in the sun to the body being inflamed and joints hurting, joint pain and soreness and sometimes there’s excess fluid on the body so swelling. That sensitivity can cause that person to be irritable,” said Hughes.
