Minor train derailment temporarily closes busy railroad crossing in Springfield WHIO TV 7 and WHIO Radio [Video]

SPRINGFIELD — A minor train derailment in Springfield temporarily closed a busy railroad crossing in Springfield.

Springfield police responded around 1:24 a.m. to N Bechtle Avenue and Perry Street after a minor train derailment.

A 45-car Indiana & Ohio Railway (IORY) train derailed 10 railcars, according to a spokesperson for the railroad.

The railway crossing at N Bechtle Ave near Perry Street was closed but has since reopened.

The railroad spokesperson told News Center 7 that two of the derailed cars were carrying hazmat materials but there was no leak and the cars are intact.

There is no threat to the public. None of the train crew were injured.

Contractors were called to help the IORY team rerail the affected cars.

The line is expected to be fully restored by tomorrow, according to the railroad spokesperson.

An investigation into the cause of the derailment is underway.
