MONROE, La. (KNOE) – May is Stroke Awareness Month and experts warn that it can happen at any time.

Stroke survivor, Willie Mae Davis, experienced her first stroke in November 2023.

“I felt myself kind of feeling funny, and I steadily walked on, and my right side got to where I couldn’t move it,” recalls Davis.

Davis’ daughter, Vickie Williams, knew her mother was having a stroke and rushed her to the hospital.

“I told her immediately ‘Mama! Mama! You’re having a stroke!’ I said ‘You’re having a stroke I got to call somebody.’ So I called my son,” said Williams.

Doctor Jason Maljaars with St. Francis Medical Center Monroe said a stroke happens when a blood clot or blocked artery stops blood flow to the brain. He said the acronym “Be Fast” is a way to identify a stroke and how to act when you see it.
