SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A little more than three months since historic flooding devastated some of San Diego’s poorest communities, more than 800 families are still living in hotels and desperately trying to rebuild.

“My parents worked so hard for that home, and just to see it destroyed and everything gone, and to see my parents, my family, my neighbors, my community… my community is broken. It’s a lot.”

But thanks to organizations like “VOAD” (Voluntary Organizations Active In Disasters) and “Global Empowerment Mission,” everything a survivor needs as they move through the phases of recovery are here in the newly deployed warehouse, from mold remediation kits to furniture.

“If they need sinks, we can help with sinks, drywall, if we have drywall available.” Elizabeth Jernberg is with Global Empowerment Mission. As a disaster survivor herself, she knows firsthand the trauma and PTSD that comes with losing everything.
