NCDOT Bicycle Helmet Initiative to begin soon [Video]

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The N.C. Department of Transportation is set to provide thousands of bike helmets to children this spring during this year’s Bicycle Helmet Initiative.

This year, the NCDOT plans to give about 12,500 helmets to 157 organizations across the state. Since 2015, the initiative has given 77,065 helmets to children who need them.

“Wearing a helmet is an easy way to reduce the risk of head injury when riding a bicycle,” said Brennon Fuqua, interim director of the state’s Integrated Mobility Division. “We hope the Bicycle Helmet Initiative will help reduce bicycle injuries and raise awareness about the importance of safe bicycling practices.”

The helmets will soon be distributed to schools, nonprofits, law enforcement agencies and other organizations for bike safety events.
