Nebraska nonprofit spends holiday preparing for flood cleanup in Spencer, Iowa [Video]

SPENCER, Iowa (WOWT) – Spencer resident Jon Muessigmann recalled when the Little Sioux River came out of its banks and inundated his town June 22.

“It wasn’t just rising water,” Muessigmann said. “The water was with a vengeance. It has force behind it. It wasn’t just starting to come up. It had speed behind it.”

Nearly two weeks later, members of the Nebraska-based nonprofit group Rapid Response are spending their Fourth of July assessing the damage.

“The storms and the damage and the disaster, they don’t take a day off,” President Ken Gruber said. “The people still need help every single day.”

“We wanted to see where the water level was at, and we just wanted to come out and meet some people and get set up for a lot of teams from the Omaha area to come up here and help out.”
