Never look away: Drowning prevention tips from Phoenix swim school [Video]

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — This First Alert Weather Day may make the pool a popular spot to cool off, but the water can be dangerous.

The Phoenix Fire Department has reported 18 drowning incidents with kids 12 and under this year. Five of those sadly turned deadly.

On the first official day of summer, there’s a global swim lesson to prevent those tragedies.

Hundreds of children across the Valley participated in the “World’s Largest Swimming Lesson” at Hubbard Family Swim School.

Around 40,000 kids are participating at waterparks, swim schools, and pools worldwide.

“19 countries across the world are sponsoring swim lessons today to share a water safety message and the importance of learning to swim,” said Bob Hubbard, co-founder of Hubbard Family Swim School.

It’s the leading cause of death for kids ages 1 to 4 in the United States.
